The man, though worn out by hunger to the last degree, pulled himself together and went on, half crawling and half dragging himself along, afraid now in a new way.It was not the fear (1) that he should die passively from lack of food, but that he should (2) be destroyed violently before starvation had exhausted the last particle of the endeavor in him that was being made toward surviving. Back and forth across the desolation drifted the howls of wolves, weaving the very air into a fabric of menace that was so tangible that he found himself, arms in the air, pressing it back from him as if it might be the walls of a windblown tent.

(2) be destroyed viovently

It has not been perceived until recently that the power and the resources of the earth are not, in fact, infinite and that the impact we collectively make upon our own environment threatens the very continuity in the chain of life of which we are a part.

the very continuity in the chain of life

Of course, people have different ways of learning English and you will have to find the way that is best for you. It is much better to talk, and to make mistakes, than not to talk, but be careful not to let the ease with which you talk and understand other people prevent you from perfecting your use of the language.

Of recent years, the ordinary man who reads for pleasure has been gradually excluded from that great debate in which every intelligent readers of the classics takes part. There are two reasons for this: first, so much criticism floods from the world's presses that no one but a scholar living entirely among books can hope to read it all; and second, the critics and analysts, mostly academics, use a language that only their fellows in the same discipline can understand.

I don't know what I said or even if I said anything. I remember walking down the endless hall again alone with the sick child.I cannnot describe my feelings. Anyone who has been through such moments will know, and those who have not cannot know, whatever words I might use.

         be through~は「~を経験する」

Envy is , I should say , one of the most universal and deep-seated of human passions. It is very noticeable in children before they are a year old, and has to be treated with the most tender respect by every educator. The very slightest appearance of favoring one child at the expense of another is instantly observed and resented.

①Clark had what the teacher , Miss Baron , thought of as good work habit.
Left to himself , he kept busy far longer than the others, ②who were all too prone to forget their work for play or chatter.

* be prone to do ~しがちな、~する傾向にある

ポイントthink of A as B 「AをBと考える」、この文ではwhat(関係代名詞)がAになっています。 be prone to doは「~しがちである」という意味ですが、これにtooがついてproneの意味が、ただ強められただけの文です!be prone to do やbe ready to do、be apt to doなどは、はじめから「be +形容詞+to do」の語法になっていて、この形容詞にtoo/only too/all tooなどの副詞がついただけのこと。

(例)He is too ready to excuse himself.(彼は何かといいわけをしすぎる)
